MARKS TAILORING CO.- Dealer's Tailoring Book - Period Fabric Samples
Titanic era 1909-10 vintage fall & winter MARKS TAILORING CO. Chicago tailoring book. Edwardian dealer's tailoring book from which gentlemen's clothing could be made to order. Book includes 57 pages with 25 au courant men's fashion illustrations for day dress, semi dress, full dress, business dress and informal dress. The marvelous large color engraved illustrations are absolutely suitable for framing. One could say a full guide to dressing for the Downton Abbey lifestyle. Designed & engraved by Emil Colson & Co. Chicago. (See a photo of the Marks Tailoring Co. building below, not included with this book.)
There are 268 fabric samples including serges, mohairs, meltons, worsteds, wool flannels, twills, stripes, tweeds, plaids, herringbones, sueded cotton, all forms of period suitings. The illustrations include elegant Edwardian suits, cut-aways, sack suits, covert coats, Prince Alberts, vests, storm coats, auto coats, Chesterfields, and more. Which brings to mind the cuffs & pockets details chart: illustrations of ornate suit details for the gentleman's closet during the Guilded Age.
This 13 pound volume consists of heavy duty cardboard stock pages with generous swatches measuring 5" X 3 ½". There are 44 swatches that have been removed, as instructed by Marks, when the fabric is sold out or otherwise no longer available. Each page is bound to the book with fabric, owing to its great long lasting condition. The book is all original 1909 vintage, NOT a reproduction.
An early 20th century image of workers in a haberdashery is posted below. A Marks Tailoring Company sign is posted with the illustrations on the wall behind the showcases. The image is not included with the purchase of this book, put just to illustrate the use of the Marks Tailoring Company by men's outfitters in the period.
Essential addition to any library of early 20th century gentlemen's fashion.
