JAMES CAMERON'S TITANIC - EARLY 20th CENTURY VINTAGE - ELABORATE ANTIQUE IRISH LACE TEA GOWN
Extraordinary early 20th century Edwardian white cotton antique Irish lace gown from James Cameron's TITANIC. Entirely hand made ivory cotton Irish crochet lace. Traditional Gibson Girl style high stand collar. Fitted bodice with button back closure. Tiny hand made crochet buttons. Large elaborate flower, leaf and vine motif with crocheted bobbles throughout lace. 3/4 sleeves with tab. Full length skirt flares at hem with sweep train. Ivory silk sash, knotted front, bow back, two long tails with crocheted ball ends. All original early 1900's vintage, NOT a modern remake.
The gown:
A true illustration of Belle Epoque extravagance.
JAMES CAMERON'S TITANIC:
In 1996 we were privileged to contribute wardrobe to the Fox/Paramount production of James Cameron's TITANIC. It is without a doubt, one of the most exciting projects we have ever been associated with. At the end of the enormous production there were naturally pieces that went missing. This gown was one of the pieces traded to us, from the production, as a replacement. All important garments that were purchased by the costume department had TITANIC production labels applied (see photo). There was a conscientious effort made by the costume designer to purchase authentic period pieces, restore them if necessary and protect them during production. They were stored in the safety of individual boxes and only brought out when a scene required them. This gown has been in our private collection since that time. It has been painstakingly stored for safekeeping. This is the first time it is being offered for public consideration.
Side note:
There was a price tag attached to this gown. The tag is from an east coast company called Suzi's Antiques. Suzi's was a fine vintage clothing establishment in the 1990's where this gown apparently was purchased.
Label:
TITANIC
("TITANTIC" (sic) - some original labels that were made by the costume department were spelled wrong.)
Approximate Measurements:
Bust measured underarm to underarm - 36-38"
Sleeve measured from seam to hem edge - 15"
Shoulder measured across back yoke - 15"
Bodice length measured frm neck seam to waist seam - 15"
Waist - 28"
Hip - 44-46"
Skirt length measured center front frm waist seam to hem edge - 42"
Skirt length incl. train, measured center back frm waist seam to hem edge - 47"
Condition:
Considering it's use in a film production and the early period of the gown it is in very good condition, however, it does have issues. Shows some minor break at brides (connectors) and wear at fabric facing behind buttons. Shows some missing edge lace and woven repairs at hem. General very slight soil throughout and light tan soil marks at back skirt placket and skirt lower above hem. Professional cleaning advised. Gown is wearable. Some minor restoration may be desired.
