POST WWII - 1947 MONTGOMERY WARD SPRING/SUMMER FULL SEASONAL CATALOG - ROCKABILLY - SWING ERA
All original 1947 MONTGOMERY WARD, Inc. Spring/Summer full seasonal catalog.
In 1883, the company's catalog, which became popularly known as the "Wish Book", had grown to 240 pages and 10,000 items. In 1896, Wards encountered its first serious competition in the mail order business, when Richard Warren Sears introduced his first general catalog. In 1900, Wards had total sales of $8.7 million, compared to $10 million for SEARS, and both companies struggled for dominance during much of the 20th century. By 1904, Wards had expanded such that it mailed three million catalogs, weighing 4 lb (1.8 kg) each, to customers.
Post World War II: It's the boom, socially & economically. 1092 pages of classic 1940's fashions, home furnishing items and other general department store items. Catalog complete, weighing nearly 6 pounds. Great for historical design research. Spectacular department of womens 40's vintage fashions with playwear and accessories. Includes men's & children's fashions. Volume also includes: watches (including Patek Philippe), cameras, pens, linens, bedding, furniture, appliances, interior accessories, bicycles & accessories, sporting goods, car accessories, tools, garden & agricultural. All original 1947, NOT a reproduction, eBook or CD copy. Significant reference for 1940's style & trends. WWII victors: a time of public spirited sensibilities.
This vintage book is a remarkable catalog. It's exceptional photography, the art direction, layout and the larger catalog format make it an exceptional document of the period.
