Philip Mangone(1884-1957) was born into a family of Italian tailors. He immigrated to the USA with his father who trained him to do fine piecework. A young Philip went to work in alterations at B. Altman. He then worked for a variety of Seventh Avenue firms, in clothing construction and design. He opened his original business, Mangone Models, in 1916.
Mangone traveled often to Europe to buy fabrics and to view the Paris collections. He booked passage on the last voyage of the Lusitania in May of 1915, but cancelled at the last minute. In 1939 he returned from Europe on the Zeppelin Hindenburg. Though badly burned, he did survive the Zeppelin crash. He eventually returned to his regular European tours. His last trip to Paris was in May of 1940. He left 30 days before the Nazi occupation. During WWII Mangone designed the uniform for the Women's Army Corps (WACs). In 1946, Mangone won Fashion Trades magazine's Gold Timble award as one of the country's top ten designers.
