1920'S PHOTO ALBUM ENGLAND, ENGLISH COUNTRY SIDE, PARIS_E O HOPPE_PHOTO PORTRAIT: ARTIST HAROLD SPEED
ALL ORIGINAL 1920s vintage photo album and E. O. Hoppé photographic portrait of Harold Speed. This photo album has presented some mysteries to us. We first purchased it because it included a portrait of artist Harold Speed by E. O. Hoppé. Upon examining photos in the album we thought it possible to be an E. O. Hoppé photographic study as it contained images that were so very similar to many that had been published his in various books. (ie. Picturesque Great Britain, published in 1926") The photographs tend to be thematic: travel, architecture, landscape. They are of locations in England, the English countryside, and France, many places where Hoppé photographed and also generally in his style of photographic technique. We found the following posting in his online ArtNet chronology: "1925 – Travels round Britain and Ireland photographing topography for the Orbis Terrarum series Picturesque Great Britain." The same period of the photographs in this album.
After contacting an expert on Hoppé we gave up the notion that we actually held a photo album that might have been a study for his future works. We speculated that perhaps the similarity of the photos was perhaps for the reason that they had been taken and assembled by someone who was either a friend or devotee of Mr. Hoppé with an interest in photography as an art form. This could open up many avenues of significance for someone who might have an interest in historic photography and indeed E. O. Hoppé.
For those unfamiliar we recommend E. O. Hoppé Estate Collection available online through Curatorial Assistance, Inc. He was ahead of his time and is often not credited for his brilliant work.
